What happens during your build
Building a home isn't just about watching walls go up. It's a carefully managed journey with clearly defined milestones, regular communication and quality checks along the way. Here's what you can expect from the day construction begins until the moment you're handed the keys.

For most families, building a home is something they'll only do once or twice in their lifetime. It's an exciting experience, but it's also perfectly normal to wonder what's happening behind the construction fencing or why some stages appear to move quickly while others seem to take longer. The reality is that every home is built through a carefully planned sequence of trades, inspections and approvals, with each stage preparing the foundation for the next.
While no two builds are exactly the same, the overall journey follows a structured process designed to ensure quality, safety and compliance at every step. Understanding how that process works not only removes uncertainty but also gives you confidence that your new home is progressing exactly as it should.
At HomeSquare, we believe communication is just as important as construction. That's why we keep our clients informed throughout every major milestone, so you're never left wondering what comes next.
From Site Preparation to a Solid Foundation
Before construction begins, your block is prepared for building. Depending on the site, this may include clearing the land, setting out the home's footprint, connecting temporary services and completing any required earthworks. Although this stage often receives little attention, it's one of the most important parts of the entire project, ensuring the site is ready for a stable and accurate build.
Once preparation is complete, the slab is poured to create the structural foundation of your home. This stage establishes the base that supports everything above it, making precision and quality essential. After the slab has cured and passed the necessary inspections, construction can begin in earnest.
Watching Your Home Take Shape
The framing stage is often when clients experience their first real sense of excitement. Timber or steel frames are erected, internal walls become visible and the overall layout of the home begins to emerge. Rooms that once existed only on a floor plan suddenly become physical spaces you can walk through and imagine furnishing.
From there, the roof structure, external brickwork or cladding, windows and doors are installed, creating what's commonly known as the lock-up stage. At this point, the home starts resembling the finished product, while internal trades begin preparing electrical wiring, plumbing, insulation and other essential services concealed behind the walls.
Although progress may appear slower during these stages, much of the most important work is happening out of sight. Every installation must meet strict building standards before plasterboard, cabinetry and internal finishes can be completed.
Some construction stages seem to move incredibly quickly, while others take longer than expected. This doesn't necessarily indicate delays. Different trades work to carefully coordinated schedules, and many stages require inspections before the next can begin, ensuring your home is built to the required Australian standards.
Bringing the Details Together
Once the major structural work has been completed, attention turns to the finishes that transform a construction site into a home. Cabinets are installed, tiling is completed, painting begins and flooring, fixtures and fittings are carefully fitted according to your selected inclusions.
This stage often feels the most rewarding because the design decisions made months earlier finally come to life. Kitchens take shape, bathrooms are completed and every room begins reflecting the vision that first inspired your build.
Before handover, your home undergoes a series of quality inspections to ensure workmanship meets the required standards and any final adjustments are completed before you receive the keys.

The Day You Receive the Keys
Handover is far more than the final step in the construction process. It's the moment months of planning, design and craftsmanship become a place you'll call home. You'll have the opportunity to inspect the completed property, understand the features of your new home and receive the information you need before moving in.
While building a home naturally involves many moving parts, the journey doesn't have to feel complicated. With experienced trades, transparent communication and a structured building process, every stage has a clear purpose and brings you one step closer to opening the front door of your new HomeSquare home for the very first time.
